Rugby School New Boarding House

The new three-storey building at Rugby Schools Collingwood Centre, off Oak Street, provides en-suite study bedrooms for 60 students as well as communal rooms and accomodation for the housemaster, assistant housemaster and matron.

Designed by GSS Architecture, special architectural features are the secluded rooftop terrace and a double height atrium. The emphasis was placed on creating high quality spaces using robust, long lasting materials to encapsulate the changing needs in society.

Located within the Atrium is a feature slatted timber clad acoustic staircase which also contains the lift shaft.  AAS ltd were appointed to design, supply and install the acoustic timber slatted panelling around the spiral staircase. Both design and installation were very complex due to the curvature around the staircase.  The framework, insulation and black fabric backing were installed prior to the slatted panelling as the timber slats were installed individually,  rather than arriving to site as pre-formed  panels.
